Rob Hagey graduated from University of California, Berkeley, in 1975 with an independent major in Spatial Theatre, combining Art and Theatre. He worked extensively under Professor Jim Meltcher, who later became head of the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts). Rob Hagey is the creative founder behind Southern California’s urban music festival, Street Scene, which Rolling Stone rated as one of the leading festivals in 2005. His 30 years of experience producing and booking award-winning music events and artists. Rob is known for his ability to bring a wide range of musical talent to San Diego. His cutting edge, visionary approach to bringing all people together has establish great respect within the music community. Rob has produced and booked such well respected artists such as BB King, Black Eyed Peas, Jack Johnson, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Tool, The Foo Fighters, R.E.M., James Brown, Kanye West. Within the Jazz industry, he founded the non-profit San Diego Jazz festival and booked many artists, to name a few: Chick Corea, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakely, McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis.
Throughout his career, Rob has shown the ability to raise money through grants and sponsorships, which has benefited communities and non-profit organizations. He was the first recipient to ever receive a grant in Jazz from The James Irvine Foundations. Contributing to the greater community, Rob has aligned himself to supporting several non-profits. He has a unique ability to raise money through innovative means of fundraising and branding sponsorships. He has dealt with National sponsor’s such as Ford, Jose Cuervo and Southwest Airlines to facilitate events. Rob is known for his ability to create a “Festival within a Festival”, customizing and designing branded sponsored venues.
Over the past 25 years, Street Scene has significantly influenced the shaping of the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. Rob began with a blank slate, creating an amazing and complete legendary venue out of nothing, all from his own persistence, aspirations and visions. Street Scene represents a groundbreaking urban renewal in San Diego by promoting tourism through the culture of music, art and culture. The results are unquestionable, creating vibrant urban areas in East Village and Gaslamp Quarter from a rough, unwelcoming urban environment. Among many awards and achievements, Rob has been granted the Landmark Pioneer Award by the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation in recognition of his significant contribution and revitalization to the City of San Diego. A true pioneer and innovator, Rob will continue to produce events from large urban productions that revitalize communities to small private events. He looks forward to sharing his wealth of knowledge through consultation.
